Let’s face it, lying on the beach with a cold drink in your hand is a glorious place to be. But if you fancy doing something a little different, why not go somewhere where you can see some of the world’s most fascinating animal species, and explore a completely different landscape? When people think about vacationing in Africa, they think of popular tourist spots like Marrakech and Cape Town- but why not go for something a little more wild and wonderful instead? Botswana consists of high plateau tablelands with hills and mountains offering spectacular scenery and plenty of great opportunities to see animals too. Here are some of the ways you can encounter animals while you’re visiting.

Go on Safari

A guided safari will allow you to see all of Botswana’s most incredible animal species- lions, elephants, rhinos, leopards, buffalos, zebras, giraffes, wildebeest, hippos and so much more. Since the tour guide will be experienced and know the area well, they will be able to maximise your chances of seeing these creatures. Botswana’s Okavango Delta is a must see safari destination, so this is something that could be worth looking into when you’re planning your trip. If you’re new to Botswana or have never been on a safari before then this is a good route to take.

Book a Boat Tour

Another way you can see animals in their natural surroundings in Botswana is to book a boat tour. There are a variety of different kinds available, from Makoro boats (similar to canoes) to motor boats, house boats and river cruise boats. They can take you to places that wouldn’t usually be accessible by land, and allow you to see the country in a completely different way.

Visit The National Parks

There are a number of national parks in Botswana, which gives you the opportunity to see wildlife and take in spectacular views. For example, Chobe National Park allows you to see elephants along the Chobe riverfront, as well as crocodiles, buffalo and baboons. In Nxai Pan National Park you’re likely to see cheetahs, zebras and giraffes. You can explore the gardens and go camping if you want an overnight adventure. The campsite is surrounded by elephant- proof mazes and other security measures, so you have peace of mind when it comes to safety.

Hire a 4×4 For a Self Driving Tour

If you want to see animals but want a little more freedom of where you go and what you do, why not consider a self-driving tour? There are places you can hire a 4×4 which will give you the power and versatility you need to navigate the landscape. It’s worth coming up with a plan of action to allow you to get the best from your time. You could plot out a route beforehand doing research online, or speak to some of the local tour guides. Either way, if you want to go it alone, this is a fantastic option for seeing wildlife in Botswana.
