If you have secured an internship placement, you will naturally want to make sure you extract maximum value from the experience. This can be easier said than done when you are taking a step into the unknown and you don’t know what to expect. Nevertheless, to help you get started, we have put together a list of things you should and should not do during your internship. Read on to discover more.

Don’t seclude yourself

Get to know your co-workers. This can be difficult, especially if you are in an environment where they do not make a lot of effort to include you. But, you have nothing to lose, so why not ask your colleagues if you can join them for lunch? This shows a willingness to fit in, and you may learn some great tips during lunchtime conversations.

Do learn new skills

If you do not come away from your internship feeling like you have learned loads of new skills, then you have not had a fruitful experience. The whole purpose of an internship is to learn. You’re not supposed to be the finished article just yet, so make sure you learn something new.

Don’t dress inappropriately

A lot of interns feel they are able to turn up to work in casual attire because they are not a full-time paid employee. This is not the case; you should dress professionally at all times. After all, you are a representation of the company.

Do network

Take every opportunity that comes your way when it comes to getting to know other people in the industry. The importance of building up a big contact book cannot be overlooked. You never know when you may need the help of someone you have met, or when they may have an opportunity for you to take advantage of.

Don’t accept bullying

If someone is bullying or harassing you, don’t simply accept it because you are the intern. Speak up. If things get out of hand, talk to your employer and look at suing for damages. There are businesses like Carey & Associates P.C.that can assist with this. They will be able to tell you whether or not the incident you have been involved in constitutes as being valid for a payout.

Do bring new ideas to the table

A lot of interns are afraid of expressing their ideas for fear that they will not be good enough. However, your thoughts are just as important as anyone else at the company, so don’t be afraid to take a chance by revealing the ideas you have.

Don’t use Facebook during your internship

This is extremely unprofessional, and if you have the time to check your social media profiles you are clearly not doing enough on your internship.

So there you have it: some of the things you should and should not do during your internship. Good luck!
