The concept of copywriting has been around for far longer than most people realize. It’s only been given a proper term and focused on in the last couple of decades. By absolutely no coincidence at all, this falls in with the digitalization of businesses. As more companies go online and demand a digital presence, the need for copywriting increases. 

But, what is copywriting and how does it relate to your business?

Don’t confuse copywriting with copyrighting, even though they sound exactly the same when spoken aloud. Contrary to what you might think, the two have no relation at all. Copywriting is simply the creation of written content – or ‘copy’ – for your business. It can be used across lots of different formats, but all of the copy pretty much serves a similar purpose. 

What’s the aim of copywriting?

Essentially, copywriting helps to advertise and market your business. A few common examples are:

  • Business information on websites
  • Blog posts

The list goes on and on, but every single element has the purpose of building your brand and marketing your company. Without good copy, you will never be able to find new customers. In many instances, persuasive sales copy can influence consumer decisions and get people to buy from you. Even something as simple as a detailed product description can convince someone to make a purchase. 

Effectively, this is how copywriting and your business goes together. The written copy will all be part of a wider strategy to get people interested in your company and its products. 

Should you write your own copy?

Technically, it doesn’t matter if you write your own copy or pay someone to do it. Many businesses outsource this work because there’s so much to do. It’s hard for some people to manage a company and also commit to creating copy across many different mediums. 

Nevertheless, it can be beneficial to learn some copywriting skills. For small business owners, it can slash your overhead costs as you don’t need to hire or outsource. Also, it gives you a valuable skill that can be put to use in other ways. If business is slow or you want to make more money, you can sell your services to other people. Once you learn how to get copywriting gigs, you quickly realize how in-demand this service is. Ironically, it may convince you to change your business idea and run a copywriting company! Or, you can do as described and take on some extra work when you have time or want some additional cash. 

That’s all there is to know about copywriting, so let’s end with some key points. Copywriting is definitely one of the most effective ways of branding and marketing your business. In fact, your entire advertising strategy can’t exist without it. Thus, you need to focus on creating excellent copy across all the different platforms you use. Make sure it’s consistent as this helps to solidify your brand image.
