When we think of our homes, we think about the relaxation and memories they provide, the comfort and reprieve they offer from the outside world. Our homes, however, affect us in other ways, too: they influence our health. Because it’s not something that many of us think about all that often, we’re often surprised to learn that our property isn’t as good for us as we first imagined. Below, we take a look at a few of the ways your property can have a negative impact on how we feel, and what you can do about it.
Sometimes, the biggest dangers are the thing that we don’t even see. Without even realizing it, many of us reduce the quality of the air in our homes, which in turn can cause breathing and other respiratory issues, irritated eyes and throat, and headaches. If you’re suffering from these and you can’t locate the cause of the issue, then it could well be your air. If you have lingering cigarette smoke, dust mites, or mold and bacteria, then your air isn’t going to be as good for you as you’d like it to be. Focus on making it cleaner and better for your health.
Most of us work hard to keep our home clean, yet don’t understand that the products we’re using are actually harmful to us. If you’re using cleaning products that are loaded with toxic chemicals, then it’s worth keeping in mind that the chemicals you’re using won’t necessarily just stay on the surface you’ve used them: they’ll also drift away, right into your lungs. As such, it’s a good idea to switch out the chemicalized products for all natural ones. You can buy air-friendly all-purpose cleaners, concentrated dishwasher gel, and floor cleaners, among other items. They work just as well, yet won’t leave a hazardous trail behind.
We all need to get enough hours of sleep under our belts. If we don’t, then we run the risk of a range of acquiring a whole host of undesirable medical conditions, including heart disease, diabetes, and a weakened immune system. While sometimes a person’s lifestyle is responsible for poor sleeping habits, at other times it’s the fault of the house. Or, to be more specific, the fault of what’s happening around the house, and the think walls that don’t block out as much sound as they should. If the sound of your neighbors or traffic is keeping you up at night, take a look at soundproofing your property – it’s not as difficult as it sounds.
When we talk about our health, we tend to focus on our physical condition. However, there’s another health factor that’s just as important – the state of our mind. Is it possible that your home isn’t as beneficial for your mind as you need it to be? If you’ve got limited natural light coming in, or not enough space, then it might only be a matter of time before it affects your happiness levels.
