  • The unexpected life lessons of literature

The unexpected life lessons of literature

We all know reading is good for the mind. As Joseph Addison said, ‘Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.’ Anyone with a love of reading knows that to be true. It has the ability to strengthen your mind. It helps you develop analytical skills. And, depending on what you’re reading, it can grow your knowledge. Of course, nonfiction is best for that, but even fiction has educational qualities.

But, you might not realize the benefits reading holds for your emotional wellbeing. Knowledge acquisition is well and good, but it’s not everything. In fact, many people stop reading once they’re out of school. Why do they need knowledge then, after all? The guide to organising an incredible event

Whether you’re trying to raise money for a charity or organisation, meet with customers and shareholders, or simply put on one heck of a party, there are few better ways to do it that with an absolutely killer event. In the business world, when a lot of people think of an event they think of rooms filled with people in suits being bored out of their minds, pretending to care about powerpoint presentations.

Now, that’s not to say that an event where information is communicated carefully and intelligently isn’t extremely important, but if you want your event to really engage people, then you need to give it something a little bit more special. To help make sure that it really is a showstopper, here is some simple advice to help you put on the best possible event. (more…)

Let’s get personal today – I want to warn you for something that’s been going around the web. I wrote this article a few weeks back, but I guess now is the time to share. When we think about scary travel movies, Eli Roth’s incredibly bloody horror movie Hostel is probably the first thing that pops into your head. But there are many more travel movies that are scarier simply because they are based on real stories. These aren’t the kind of stories about people getting slaughtered, these are the kind of stories that freak you out because you know someone lived it and has survived to tell the story. They’re about people surviving terrible accidents or situations. They’re freaked out by mother nature instead of zombies or murderers. Must watch for travelers, because who knows, you might pick up some survival skills! Somehow, after I watched the Shallows recently, I’m SO into this kind of thrillers, so I decided to collect a few recent ones I saw inspired by true events. And yes, I must admit, they do fuel my wanderlust, often they start in the most beautiful places like Mexico, Hawaii or Australia. Enjoy!

Specifically, I think you should be considering laying out a new path for your career. Forget about where you were last year and look towards new challenges or choices. If you’re not happy with the job you’re currently working in, change it. If you want to try your luck in a completely new industry, explore it. There is nothing holding you back except the failure to attempt a change. Once you take the first step, though, you might find it easier than you thought. Of course, it’s all very well suggesting that you get out there and find a new career, but how do you actually go about it? What are the steps that you will need to take? (more…)
